Oliver's Story

On December 18th 2020, we heard the words that no parent ever wants to hear “your child has cancer.” It was the beginning of a battle that our brave little warrior, Oliver, fought and, thankfully, won. Oliver was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare form of childhood eye cancer. Thankfully, retinoblastoma is treatable and has a 96% survival rate when diagnosed early.

Our son was treated by an amazing team at Seattle Children’s hospital, where he underwent three rounds of intra-arterial chemotherapy. Oliver’s tumor stopped responding to chemotherapy after those three treatments, which caused us to make the difficult decision to enucleate his right eye in order to prevent the cancer cells from spreading. Due to the size and location of Oliver’s tumor, we anticipated that Oliver would need systemic chemotherapy after his surgery to ensure that all the cancer cells have been eliminated.

Oliver’s eye was sent to pathology following his enucleation procedure to determine if additional chemotherapy would be necessary. When the pathology lab results came back, we received the incredible news that our sweet boy was cancer free and did not need additional treatments!

Our brave warrior had beaten cancer!
